Nintendo already has people locked into their particular ecosystem, and their own software is the key.

Keep banging that drum, Osc. Maybe one day you'll learn the rhythm.

Nintendo have locked people in? I guess that's why we are seeing Wii numbers for the Wii U.

Seriously though, why would you choose the Wii U version of a game if you can play the PS4 & X1 versions on multiple devices?

You totally missed the point there (see underlined, above). People who want Nintendo games know where to get them, and that is the ecosystem maintained BY Nintendo. If it was such a great idea for the company to abandon that, it would have happened already.

The president of the company has even explained that much.

Expanding an ecosystem isn't abandoning it. There is nothing to stop them requiring a purchase of one of their consoles to allow you to play on other devices. They would just be adding value to people who buy into the ecosystem, something they should all be trying to do.

And the reason they haven't done it might just be because it requires a shift to digital formats. Or they are slower with these things like with their online system.
