Expanding an ecosystem isn't abandoning it. There is nothing to stop them requiring a purchase of one of their consoles to allow you to play on other devices. They would just be adding value to people who buy into the ecosystem, something they should all be trying to do.
And the reason they haven't done it might just be because it requires a shift to digital formats. Or they are slower with these things like with their online system.
