I also started college last year. It is a relatively small university; 7500 people. First day of classes, I really had no friends except my roommate. At lunch I grab my balls (figuratively) and tell myself that I'm gonna make some friends. I knew I wouldn't try to force friendships, but would try go get to know as many people as I could, and see with whom I was most compatible. I see a table with a boy and a girl, obviously two freshmen just as lost and confused as me, and I ask to join them. We all had quite a bit in common. Our friendships grew so quickly. Turns out they live in my residence hall. They introduced me to some of their other friends they had recently made. Gradually our friend circle grows. We all quickly become great friends. It's about 9 people in all. I could never have asked for a better group of friends. Looking back it doesn't seem that I tried very hard to make those friends. I like to let friendships just happen naturally.
For me, acquiring friends is a peculiar phenomenon; it's always gradual, and it seems that I'm somewhat oblivious of just what is happening until we are already great friends.
Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.
