Microsoft can and to Some degree Sony can as other divisions in the company usually keep the companies a float whilst the initial period of consoles are sold at a significant loss.

Nintendo on the other had all they do is games. If they were to sell a console at a $100-$200 loss then their profits (especially form the GCN and Gameboy area, would have dwindled away real quick and if the Wii failed then Nintendo probably wouldn't have been around no more.
