Yeah. It's pretty crazy to me how many people are all, "But it was just like Steam!" As being digital centric is all there is to Steam.
On the other hand, there is indeed something to the idea that if you listen to your customers they're always going to tell you that they just want a faster horse. Problem is, in this case Microsoft wasn't offering a car or even a faster horse. They were offering a horse that was very much like your old horse, only this one fucked you in the ass.
"Everyone says, 'Oh, it's because they're stupid. Big companies are stupid.' They can't be stupid. How did they get that big and stay that big if they're stupid? Microsoft isn't stupid."
They don't start out stupid. They become stupid. They manage to stay big for a time because of inertia.
For a guy whose whole shtick is apparently that he's some kind of prominent smarty pants, this Schell person is neither all that prominent nor all that smart.
