Surprised to see even a broadly appealing, massive hit like New Leaf has 25% download sales. That's well over a million downloads.

A million copies where Nintendo gets to keep more of the purchase price for itself.

A million copies which will never hit the used market.

A million copies which a retailer didn't have to order and stock before it could be sold.

The last point may actually be the most important for publishers. Games like Muramasa failed on the Wii before even getting a chance to succeed because retailers decided not to order any. In a digital market, the customer gets to decide what will succeed, not the retailer who tries to guess what the customer might want.

"The worst part about these reviews is they are [subjective]--and their scores often depend on how drunk you got the media at a Street Fighter event."  — Mona Hamilton, Capcom Senior VP of Marketing
