Golden Sun
This was a spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG for me. Same style graphics, Nintendo quarky charm, yet a serious JRPG, with a deep plot of great battle mechanics. Also I think the difficulty was spot on, I beat the boss in both Golden Suns on the last possible turn I could make (it's a turn based RPG). Ran out of Summons, Mana, healing items, and I only had 1/4 party members who hadn't been knocked out, beat the boss of the game with a weak sword attack... LOL
Also Fire Emblem was great too.
I'm surprised how little these games got voted. I know they are niche, but wow. Pick these games up people!
