In Dragon Quest it's usually the case that it's fun to play until level 20, but then the game developers always go: "Uh oh, already level 20 and less than a quarter of the game done. Now we need to scale EXP gains to make you finish the game at around level 45."

A good read but this statement caught my eye.

Have you played Pokemon recently because I think Pokemon does this as well. How is this different from Pokemon? I've never played Dragon Quest but I would like to start another RPG that isn't Nintendo styled (Pokemon, Paper Mario, or Mario and Luigi).

Edit: If you haven't played Pokemon recently, you get half the gym badges and about a third or half the story done at level 35 and beat the game with level 50-55 Pokemon. And you start off with level 5 pokemon and get to level 20 about less than a quarter of the game as well.

I haven't played Pokémon since Red, but I don't remember it being anywhere close to "fight 30+ battles to gain a level up". Not to mention that this number keeps increasing in Dragon Quest. The best DQ game is IV, because there is a dungeon where Liquid Metal Slimes appear frequently and in big numbers. These enemies net a huge amount of EXP compared to regular foes, but run away from battle quickly. However, due to the frequency of appearing and their numbers, you'll manage to kill quite a few of them in a short amount of time. Other DQ games make the Metal Slime family killing a tedious process, but it's still much faster than relying on regular enemies.

I my expierene it's more level ~40 or so, but you generally do hit a wall where the only good EXP you get are the daily trainer battles unless you want to grind like crazy against the same boring repetitive zones... and even then it does take forever to level up.
