3DS and WiiU design philosophies are remnants of Nintendo's success with the Wii. They thought they had to bring a gimmick to the table again.

Wii succeeded because the hardware was made for software ideas like Wii Sports. 3DS and WiiU had/have Nintendo devs struggling to think of software to make for their hardware, instead of the other way around like they did with the Wii, the SNES shoulder buttons, and the N64 analog stick.

They didn't think of a title to make before the hardware. The SM64, the Wii Sports, the DS touch stuff.
