10 years.  That's my prediction.  10 years for it to be pretty standard on PC and 15-20 years for consoles.

It's probably much sooner than that, but we will approach an area of diminishing returns soon.  That what the who 'retina display' is supposed to mean - that it at a level where they eye can't tell the difference.

It's like on graphics now.  You can double or quadruple the number of polygons, but it doesn't do much.

We didn't really have many 720p TV's, when the Xbox 360 was released, and that was only 2005. 1080p became popular later. 

Both the Xbox One and PS4 a reported to be able to do 4K, but I think its probably just up-scaling.



 

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
