Edward Snowden showed us that there are endless very good reasons to be paranoid. If we don't defend ourselves now, we won't have a chance in the future as technology gets better and better, surveillancing more of our lives every single day. And I'm not hating on the Xbox, that's just one tiny part of the picture. All I'm saying is, be careful. Microsoft is savin each and every Skype Call, you're absolutely sure they're not saving Kinect commands? I mean, after all, I imagine it will wokr like voice recognition on windows phone most of the time. It sends your command to the server and you get a reply from that server. It will be saved in the process, I'm absolutely sure about that. No one will look at it personally, but the systems will analyze all the data, making profiles and so on. And with modern supercomputers, you have such good algorithms that they can search all the data in no time.
If we continue to feed that monster, sometime in the not too distant future, we will have a time where every human in the first world is completely transparent. And in such a future, be very careful about saying or writing anything negative about our oh so glorious democracy. It will be far worse than anything the UDSSR had to offer. And if you just pull the switch so you're no longer under supervision, guess what: You're making yourself suspicious.
There once was a time when everyone was innocent until proven otherwise. With what's going on right now, that principle is turned upside down. Now everyone is suspicious until proven otherwise. Oh and by the way, I got nothing to hide, but that's not a reason for me to let everybody walk around inside my bedroom.
To come back to the Xbox, I don't know what the kinect will do exactly. It could indeed happen that it won't save any data at all. But at the moment, it's best to remain skeptical. Of course, if you don't care about privacy, go ahead and buy that stuff. But don't go whining if somebody knocks on your door asking about that Che Guevara Poster on your wall.
By the way, Albert Einstein once also was called what would be todays equivalent of a tin foil head. Turns out that dude was right with all that relativity and stuff. You just never know and with things like that, it's imo better to be skepical at first than to whine about it afterwards. Because once the data is there, it won't get deleted EVER. So our only possibility is to not feed the data monster anymore.
