Thd joker tells two different origin stories about his scars in the movie.  It is never clearified which one is correct.  One is about his abusive dad the other about his ex wife.

Joker says in the movie to Batman "you complete me"  he is obviusly inspired by Batman.  Without Batman you have no Joker.

Both stories are most likely BS, he probably would have a million such stories like in the killing joke. I like the fact that TDK brought mystery back to the character by not giving him a definitive origin.
