To play games like New Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Smash Bros. U, X, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, etc. I would assume.

"Enchanced" in the same way the N64 Rumble Pak "enhanced" certain games without being absolutely neccessary, sure.

Because the Wii had a new controller, so they had to I think include something new with the Wii U, even if it was impractical in some ways. Nintendo can't resist repeating a successful formula (or at least attempting to).
