Sony vs. Microsoft just doesn't have the same bite Nintendo vs. Sega did. First of all, Sony and Microsoft are not primary video game developers. Sega and Nintendo were (are). Not to mention, the Xbox One and PS4 are practically identical. Only few exclusives separate them.
The consoles have no personality anymore... the PS2 had personality, the Wii had personality, the Xbox had personality... the 360/One and PS3/PS4 are the exact same. This is why I don't understand the console wars today. For example, with all the hype about the PS4 I thought the exclusives would be through the roof but instead it only has around 5.... the One has a few more but not much.
Anyway, back then, the console wars were much more fun especially considering the companies even get into it (Sega does what Nintendon't, blast processing, Mortal Kombat blood, Nintendo stealing Street Fighter, etc. etc.). This generation started out interesting when Sony started firing bullets at Microsoft at E3, but now that MS has reversed its position it's no longer fun lol.
