A few months before launch I expected it to be in line with the average AA/AAA PS3 exclusive (2-3m), it was only until a week or 2 before launch I realised it'll be big, but even then I was still guessing 4-5m. Now it looks like it'l get Uncharted 2/3 numbers (6-7m) when it's all said and done. ND must easily be Sony's most profitable dev for this gen, probably for next as well. |
I have to admit TLoU made quite the fool out of me, never expected it to be so huge, it's already selling better & more popular than any of the Uncharted games. Also I'm sorry, but it probably won't get to 6-7m numbers like UC2/3 because they only got that high due to holidays release & being the most bundled games on the PS3, they would be 4.5-5.5m sellers otherwise. I still think it can sell 5.5m+ and with a summer release and little in terms of bundling, it's doing far better than any Uncharted game, very impressed.
I also doubt ND is Sony's most profitable dev, Gran Turismo 5 + Prologue + PSP GT probably made much more and then GT6 is coming later this year. Also Sony Santa Monica probably made more proft too, almost 19m God of War games sold (including remakes, GoW2 which release in 07 & the PSP games) and then all the games they collaborated on like Journey, Flower, Twisted Metal, Warhawk, Starhwak, PlayStation All Stars, The Unfinished Swan and more.
As for games that defied my expectations the most, has to be Skyrim. Looking at the game comparison tools, I didn't think in a million years it would pretty much sell on par with GTA IV on 360, that's crazy.
I always believed God of War III would take the series/genre to new heights, but I didn't expect it to sell over 6m copies! With virtually no bundling, weak advertisement (outside the US), no multiplayer, no guns, release during a PS3 shortage & Q1 release. Likely to never be topped in the genre again.
I didn't think Heavy Rain would even reach 2 million, now it's on track to reach 3 million which is great.
Red Dead Redemption & Batman Arkham series are both much bigger than I thought they'd be.
That's about it for me in terms of positive outcomes, for the negatives...
Didn't think a console God of War or Gears of War game would ever sell so poorly, until Ascension & Judgment. GeoW:J will reach 2m+ and GoW:A 2.5m+ which is a far-cry from their huge predecessors.
LittleBigPlanet 2, Resistance 2 & 3, inFAMOUS 2 & every Motorstorm after the first all sold significantly less without the same mass bundling, suprising as I always thought the point of mass bundling is to give a huge amount of exposure to a franchise in the hopes that future titles can be huge without being given away for free in the millions, didn't work here. I wonder what would happen to Uncharted 4 if Sony didn't mass bundle it.
Bioshock Infinite is selling far less than I hoped, deserves much more. Same with Alan Wake, that game is amazing and I hoped it would've sold similarly to Heavy Rain. I expected Gears of War 3 to be a 7-8 million seller based on it's insane 3m+ opening week, looks like the legs just weren't there for that to happen.
Now there's probably more but that's all I can think of for now.
