Are Pikmin 3 FW sales proof enough for you that the Wii U is not doomed?

I really don't think they'll ever release a console/portable hybrid, as they can make more money selling two different platforms. I bet what they'll do with their next console is simply to have it make better use of the gamepads, such as supporting dozens of them at once and letting people play different games at the same time.
