I played the 1st but it got repetitive and boring. I don't like starting in the middle of games. Does the story tie together? 

Not very much. A little bit, it does. But for the most part AC II is the beginning of the Ezio trilogy. Just... before you play it, make sure you know about the Apple of Eden. Or just watch this, it should help. It's a recap of the first AC game.
