In the tournament scene there is usually more support for older games because people know more about them, the character tiers, glitches and such are more stable. But you both are right because once everything is discovered, eventually people do tend to move on so saying it gets more hype as it gets older is both partially true and false.
If Brawl didn't have elements like tripping and purposely was slowed down due to mystery complaints (I never heard anyone complain about its speed outside of its creators when justifying changes made in Brawl) of it being too fast, it would have been played but Melee is the favorite of the tournement crowd because it fits what the competitive Smash Bros. players want from the series. If the next Smash Bros game is closer to Melee in terms of how it plays, just like with Street Fighter 4 and Marvel vs Capcom 3 (which most tournament players at first didn't like compared to older games like Street Fighter 3: Third Strike or Marvel vs Capcom 2) it will eventually be replaced. If it plays more like Brawl, you will probably be seeing Melee or some sort of fan made Melee game in its place.
