Tribalism extended to cast a wide net. Basically anything that you consciously or subconsciously connect to your own sense of self becomes a matter of pride/celebration at the success of that thing.
Bringing it back to the subject of this site. At least with game consoles we have a direct vested interest in the success of our preferred platform: more and better games. Not that it makes the extent of fanaticism with gaming consoles any less ridiculous, but at least there's a direct personal benefit to rooting for "victory".
