The problem with a thread/statement like this, is that talking about "PC Gaming" NOW, as opposed to even 10-15 years ago, is a hugely different thing. Once upon a time, console gaming and pc gaming were totally different things. Every once in awhile you'd see a port of a game from one to the other. But it there was a distinct difference between console games and pc games. They were two different worlds of gaming, and two you could enjoy seperately. And as such, "PC Gamers" back then were a totally different breed as well.

Nowadays I find more and more so-called "PC Gamers" who don't necessarily like what used to be considered po games, so much as they just like/prefer playing ports of console games on their PC, via Steam or what have you. It's become a melting pot, and to me, that's not "PC Gaming". That's just ports of console games, played on pc (often with console-like controllers, or in some cases using straight up PS3 or Xbox 360 controllers).

So if "PC Gamers" have grown as a crowd, it's not that actual pc games have become more popular, but that many former console gamers have migrated with the same games they would be playing on home systems, for their computers. That's my take on it anyway.

Well it's more that as console have grown more capable and games have gotten much more expensive it just makes sense to make games multiplatform these days. Unless a game requires very specific controls or an open platform without the publishing requirements of a console it makes no sense to limit the market of a game to just one platform unless the platform maker is footing the bill. Many of the most popular games on consoles are from ex PC developers and franchises, CoD, Battlefeild and The Elder Scrolls (3 of the biggest 3rd party franchises on consoles right mow) started out as a PC exclusives for example. So you could just as much say that console gamers are playing ex PC style games. And most of the most popular games on PC are still games that aren't available on consoles for example arguably the biggest game in the world right now League of Legends with it's 32+ million unique players a month and growing is a PC only game. Console ports are actually a very small segment of the market on PC. Diablo 3 for example sold over 12 million units on PC wich is way more than any port of a console game on PC I have ever heard of.
