A lot of these games don't have complete sales data and I'm sure there's a few PS2 RPGs that aren't even in the database considering how many of the damn things there were.

That said the Mistwalker games are often cited as bombs because they not only cost more to develop than most (if not all) of the RPGs on the PS2 list but also because they're supposed to 'save' the 360 in Japan, something neither one has actually done. So while they may outperform the typical low-key PS2 RPG release due to massive backing by MS and lots of trumpeting, they're not really accomplishing too much.

great answer. Yes they were supposed to save 360 in Japan and they failed if success is measured by Selling systems. I ask you this question. Who can make a high development cost Jrpg besides S-E without proper funds and Succeed? Mistwalker games did cost more to develop, but they were funded by microsoft, they probably won't end up selling million copies of any game they make but at least they TRY to make them.  One can't say they failed to sell copies, or declare them bombs, since they sold adequately considering the userbase, and comparing them to sales of jrpgs on the ps2, they sell good.

Well that's also part of the problem, only RPGs backed by big companies with lots of money really break out in sales. Only the SE RPGs are selling a lot on PS2, only the 360 RPGs backed by Microsoft are selling the best, and part of the reason Tales of Symphonia sold on the Gamecube was because it was backed by Nintendo. So compared to typical RPGs, the 360 games sold well, but compared to those back by big companies, they kind of don't compare.

Also, they might have sold well considering the userbase in Japan, but I think Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey should have sold way more in at least NA if not EU. Microsoft pushed those games outside of Japan too (the Lost Odyssey commercials don't stop) but you wouldn't know it when comparing sales to the massive userbase. If all of these shooters can sell millions I would like to tink a couple of hyped RPGs could crack 1 million too.
