So the problem with Nintendo home consoles for the past couple years is lack of games. Wii support ended too soon and Wii U has a huge post launch drought. Here is my idea of a way they could have avoided all that.

Release Operation Rainfall games sooner, delay Wii U by a year and have some early Wii U games released as Wii games.

2011 wasnt a horrible year. What I would do is release Xenoblade sometime around April and move Kirby/Fortune Street up as summer titles while Skyward Sword, Skylanders, Just Dance, Rayman Origins are the holiday line up.

For 2012, Last Story and Pandoras Tower should have been released in the first half of the year. For the holidays again have Skylanders/Just Dance and I think Pikmin 3/DKC Tropical Freeze should have beem the big holiday titles.

To start 2013 have Rayman Legends and Lego City. Just Dance/Skylanders would be fine as the only holiday titles.

Wii U could launch Nov 2013, 32gn w/Nintendo Land for $299, no basic sku. At launch it would have the spring and summer updates already along with virtual console ready. Launch games would include Mario 3D World, Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, ZombiU (this game could have used extra time for polishing it up), Scribblenauts, Arkham Origins, Skylanders, Just Dance, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed 4, Watch Dogs, Sonic Lost World also EA would probably be on board so Battlefield 4 and sports titles.

Then 2014 line up looking like Wonderful 101, Mario Kart 8, Wii Fit U, Bayonetta 2, X, Yarn Yoshi, SMTxFE, Smash Bros would likely see no post launch slump.
