First Bioshock is one of best environmental storytelling games in last 15 years, which is order of magnitude harder to make properly than usual cinematic approach. Honestly, considering how much that game improved old, worn-out FPS genre, I would consider it much more important than anything else that came since, even though, subjectively, there are games I enjoyed more.

The Last of Us does environmental storytelling as much as Bioshock, but it also couples it with traditional cut-scenes. I enjoyed Bioshock Infinite quite a lot, but its characters aren't nearly as well fleshed out as the ones in TLoU. Story is good overall, but most of what is important in it happens during the last few hours. The rest isn't nearly as engaging emotionally as what you find during the whole of TLoU.

I was talking about Bioshock 1. Game that proved that there are still developers who are willing to make exceptional stories in incredible settings (and what a story and setting that was) in ways that are very unique to games, without reaching unnecessary into bag of Hollywood solutions.

My point still stands.

What point exactly, except different strokes for different folks, what OP pretty much is all about? I personally find Bioshock 1 leaps and bounds more immersive and engaging than TLoU.

My point is that The Last of Us did push story telling forward in the same way games like Bioshock and Halflife did before it. I wouldn't have enjoyed Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite nearly as much if their story telling wasn't good. Cause most FPS games don't do much to me. But in the case od that game series, it does it well enough and different enough to be appealing to me.
When it comes to The Last of Us, the story telling is present in most of its aspects. If these games represent the future of game story telling, it's gonna be an incredible time to be a gamer.
