For starters, they needed no RROD. That was a big factor in why people didn't want it. What series/game style do you suggest could turn them around with some legs? I don't see an existing one or one that could be made in order to do that.

I think RROD was the main reason that the PS3 was able to make a comeback at all. That said, in Japan both the PS1 and PS2 had terrible failure rates. While the PS1 had issues outside of Japan, the western PS1 was Sony's third revision of the console. Initial two versions of the Japanese PS1 had even worse overheating and DRE issues than the western launch consoles. The PS2's failure rates were so bad, Sony settled a class action lawsuit and offered free repairs. Yet that didn't stop both the PS1 and PS2 from dominating in Japan.

Nothing could stop the PS1 or Ps2 from dominating Japan. The game library for both of the consoles was so fantastic and had such an enormous amount of exclusives, there was no other platform to buy. If Nintendo didn't screw up the N64 and Gamecube, I don't think they would have dominated in such a way.

I agree with you partially. If Nintendo hadn't botched the N64, things would be different. The Gamecube and original Xbox were doomed to fight over second place before they launched.
