Ok let my break it down, from what I understand the WiiU is a 7th generation console [with ps3/xbox360] because of the Nintendo Wii being a whole generation behide. So the Wii was consider a gen behide because it wasnt graphicly on par to the ps3/xbox 360, that makes it the less powerful console, and which [by fanboy logic] makes it a generation behide...Why would you consider a new console release by a company in the same generation as the previous one? doesn't make since but lets get back on subject.
So By this logic I come to the conclusion that the ps4 will also be 7th generation. because..
Well to start I could do back the the PS1 and Nintendo 64 era but the reduce confusion lets just start at ps2 era.
Out of the PS2,Gamecube, and Xbox. The PS2 was obviously consider the less power console. which by [fanboy logic] makes it a generation behind. So instead of being in 6th generation its in 5th gen, which makes the PS3 in 6th generation and now the upcoming PS4 in the 7th generation category.Like this. (only including Sony/micosoft/Nintendo)
5th Generation:PS1 ,PS2
6th Generation: Xbox,Gamecube,Wii,Ps3
7th Generation: Xbox 360, WiiU, PS4.
Make since? not really? well thats because its behide a completely bised logic! Lets just agree to stop with the fanboyistic logic and go by the fact that a console release after the previous one is the next generation line of consoles. So by time. if a new console comes out, what ever generation is currently going on it fits in there. I guess if you consider the ouya a gaming console, yes its in 8 generation.
So yea, I could have done more research but if theres something im missing. tell me. :D

Everybody knows that the wii U is "8th gen", what people mean when they call it 7th gen is that it matches on paper the specifications of the 7th gen machines. The ps2 in the other hand was way ahead of the ps1 and n64. The weakest of its gen specs wise, but a generational leap ahead of the previous gen. The wii u is not regarded as being 7th gen because it is weak, but because it is as strong as a gen 7th machine.
