Part of the problem here is the shorter cycle for the Wii. If PS4 and XB1 have another long cycle like their predecessors and WiiU a short one then it's possible that we'll see 3 Nintendo consoles in the same timeframe as 2 from Sony/MS. At that point either we say that Ninty had two consoles in one gen or the others had consoles that straddled two gens.
Frankly I blame the companies involved. It's simply ridiculous that they should waste their time focussing on sales and profitability when problems like this go unresolved.
