It's always pretty funny that the focus turns to Mario in these discussions.
Mario started out as Jumpman in Donkey Kong, and then Nintendo took the character, made some big changes, and the most successful gaming series of all time was created.
If that doesn't prove that it's entirely possible to create something truly new out of something that already exists, then nothing ever will.
