Actually you are right.  It's already happened. 

This is probably closer to the truth. The current generation of kids won't grow up playing on a 3DS or Vita but are getting accustomed to touch interfaces on iOS and Android devices for their portable gaming fix.

Older or more established gamers may lament the absence of buttons (and some devices/add-ons may address this), but as developers build games around touch and kids grow up using touch screens the majority will cease to care.

I was thinking this as well.  I remember for a long time FPS were the domain of PCs because dual analog was too imprecise in comparison but games like Goldeneye and most significantly Halo got a whole generation playing FPS on consoles and now those that grew up playing that way think it's the best console scheme.    Wouldn't surprise me if in ten years, the ten year olds of today were swearing by touch screen controls over dual analogs for FPSs.
