McDonaldsGuy said: The PS2 sold 23 million consoles in Japan, which is equal to the amount of Wii and PS3 consoles sold COMBINED. The DS and PSP combined sales in Japan equal well over 50 million. The problem is that Japanese devs couldn't adapt to the HD generation. Konami, Capcom, Sega, Namco weren't irrelevant but took a back seat to western devs this generation, and in the next generation, they are practically done. Konami has Metal Gear Solid and that's it. Capcom couldn't even get Dead Rising 3 going til Microsoft helped them. It's sad to see. Japanese games have the heart and soul you don't see in many western games. Hopefully they finally adapt this next generation, but as I said, they are barely on the radar. Square Enix looks to be making a little comeback with Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3, but who knows when they will be out and if that is all S.E. has (for Japanese). |
How do Japanese games have heart but not western games?

Japanese have lost their heart and soul I believe as well, in their effort to westernize games. But games like Castlevania, Mega Man, Radiant Silvergun, Super Mario, Panzer Dragoon, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Contra, Resident Evil, Act Raiser, Snatcher, etc. etc. The Saturn had tons of soul as well, for example. It's just not the same today with generic shooters like Mass Effect, Gears of War, Halo, Call of Duty etc. etc. They're not bad games but they are super generic and expendable.

You should check out the 3rd party 3DS games that are Japanese. The Japanese regain their heart & soul with what they have been making for the 3DS.
I plan on getting Project X Zone this month, and maybe some other Japanese games too.

No doubt, the 3DS is my favorite system right now. But like this thread said, it's pretty much all on handhelds now. Project X Zone looks awesome, though I am not much of a fan of Tekken. Know what would even be more awesome? The World Ends With You 2.
I just hope that this generation they finally regain their heart and soul on the PS4 or Wii U (and Xbox One too!), but it looks like they are not. Capcom, Sega, Konami, SNK, Namco, were all basically no shows outside of MGS5 and Dead Rising and Sonic. Square Enix came out with KH3 and FF15 but that's it.... man I miss the NES-PS2 days.... all those great Japanese games. Western games aren't bad either though (though it may seem like I am bashing them). Borderlands and God of War are some of my favorite series.
