Don't know. Metallicized finishes generally wear really well. Though scratches as you mentioned are a problem. The biggest problem with metallicized finishes is aherence to the plastic. But typically where that is a problem, automobiles, you're talking about something that sits in the son all day and bakes. So the plastic is heated, leaching out the oils, which then aid in the separation of the finish from the plastic.
I don't own, but I like the chromium finishes of the blue and red controllers. Though I appreciate the criticism that they smudge too easily. That would be, after all, understandable. Gold isn't my favorite color though, so this would only interest me if I had the Star Wars Xbox 360 S and wanted more controllers. I do wish I had the Star Wars Xbox 360 though. Possibly the best Xbox 360 model released.
