I think this is a situation of being sort of surprised. They state in the article that the executive first saw the poster and then said "o we own Donkey Kong". It could have been a thing were they thought they didn't own it, but when they took a tour after they bought Rare those properties still being displayed on the wall by a poster made them think they did own it after all.
