Not anymore, no. There's a lot of neat stuff going on here, not the least of which is freely selectable alternate characters, which were usually either just unlockable (like Luigi in Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and 3D Land), or, like in NSMBWii and U, force you to go multiplayer if you want to touch the other characters.
Edit: and the return of Peach. Such is quite exciting.
