Honestly, I did not play the game. I would like to play the game very much, but my PS3 died on me a few months ago, and I'm reluctant to buy a new one with the next generation on the way.
The point of my post was not to bash TLOU. I'm sure it's probably very good. The point was to mock the absurd reaction of Sony fans to the game. Before the game even came out, we had topics like "Can Naughty Dog Revolutionize The Industry Twice In A Generation". There were several threads devoted to pointing out how great the reviews were. Honestly, some people were ready to annoint this the best game ever the second they debuted it. I know this is typical for a big exclusive, but the amount of fervor for this one is ridiculous.
In general, I don't get the hype surrounding Naughty Dog. In my mind, Naughty Dog produces games that are very polished in terms of graphics, controls, and presentations, but I've never found that their games (I've pretty much played the Crash and Uncharted Series for reference) do anything truly unique or interesting in terms of gameplay. From what I've seen, The Last Of Us basically follows that trend. A very polished and well made game that likely doesn't break the mold. And based on what I'm reading, my opinion is correct. The ones claiming this was a standard raising game haven't really been able to explain why, in terms of gameplay, it is so besides the fact that Naughty Dog made it and it's awesome.
Of course, I didn't play it so my opinion on the game doesn't mean much, but I am 99% sure from my observations that the hype for the game is due as much to bias as it is to the actual gameplay. The fact is if that a lot of the more ridiculous talk (like the op that is trying to compare a third person shooter based heavily on narrative to a more comedic hack and slash open world game) is based on console fans trying to justify their particular console. Of course, other console fans do this too, but normally not in such a lulzy manner.
