It is all about the pixel density. Play 720p on a 32" screen and it looks fine, but on anything larger and it doesn't look great. I loaded up Uncharted 3 on my 100" projector screen and it just looked poor, especially as my PC runs at 1080p on a 23" screen
Anyway, 1080p is certainly going to make things look better, but hopefully they keep the AA to the same level to make it look smoother. 4k would remove the problem on 40" screens I reckon, but maybe not so much on anything larger
I did go and see Sony's 4k 65" screen the other day and it was truly amazing. Bring on next-next gen!
