The six axis is nor a gimmick is actually very useful forshooters just wasn't used. The analog sick placement on the xbox brand of controllers was only done to be different from ps2 and is the dumbest feature of those controllers

dont take this the wrong way but several years ago people were modding 360 controlers to have giro sensor boards fitted so they could have the same motion sensing as the 6 axis ps3 controller, a gimmick you say but it was used in several early ps3 titles just no one really liked using it as for where the left alalogue  stick is placed is really quite a silly argument as the right stick is placed in the middle, i can already think of several bonuses of the touch pad suck as RTS games where a mouse controller could be used (you cant call a laptops touch pad a gimmick) or navigation through game menues or the ps4's dashboard.
