Where are you getting the "33%" Xbox 360 failure rate figure from? I know the 360 had a high failure rate early on, but I don't think it is quite that high after the first few months following release. I might be wrong.

CONSOLE FAILURE RATE: Xbox 360 - 54.2 percent

SECOND CONSOLE FAILURE RATE: Xbox 360 - 41.2 percent

GAMERS WITH FRIENDS WHO HAVE HAD A CONSOLE FAILURE: Xbox 360 - 69.9 percent

That article was posted in 2009, 4 years after it released.

Microsoft fixed the issues with the newer 360 design.

At the time of this article

36.4% of 360 owners bought a second console, compared to 13..4% of PS3 owners.

This article was written in August 2009, when 30 and 23 million 360's and PS3 had been sold respectively. This means that 7.5 million 360's were replacement consoles at this point, and about 2.5 million PS3's.

So regarding the OP, you would have been right had you waited a year and a half. The 360-PS3 gap was <5 million by the end of 2009.
