Leaving aside whether that's the best metric, and excluding Monster Hunter (for multiple reasons), you're forgetting Dragon Quest Monsters, Kingdom Hearts (arguably an ARPG), and Sticker Star all exceed that mark in two years. Dream Team is almost guaranteed to join them in just a few months, and Pokemon will take all of ten minutes after release to do so as well. By contrast, the PS3 (likely the second best candidate, in my opinion) had between two to five JRPG million sellers (depending on what you consider Valkyria Chronicles and the Souls games) over its entire lifespan. You're right that the 3DS currently pales in comparison to the DS (and likely always will), but since DS development is no longer a viable option, it seems to me that the 3DS is likely the strongest platform for the genre at the moment. Besides, JRPGs tend to take a while to develop: by 2006, the DS also only had five million-selling JRPGs. |
Oh, I was just using Japan only. That's because other regions are largely irrelevant for most JRPGs outside of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. DQ7 and MH Tri were the only two games that people could possibly use and I don't consider MH Tri an RPG (or any MH really). Japan is the only region that matters concerning DQ, and I think DQX is large proof of that.
