It's just a different world than when those systems launched, and there's also two systems coming out at the same time, vying for every sale.

I disagree. Worldwide has gotten a lot bigger since 12 years ago. Consoles are actually getting into new countries, sales as a whole, are up gen over gen, and there is less competition from the Nintendo side. As far as other devices eating up the market.
