The 3ds got long term results. It continues to be the number 1 console week to week.
I think the reason they won't do it is because they have patience and don't want to lose money by dropping price. The wiiu will do well this Christmas with the game they have coming out. Next Spring would be a good time to do a price drop. Plus they could just bundle New Super Mario Bros U with at 299.99 in a white console and sell every unit they ship this Christmas.
