For people that want their disks and to stay with the current status quo, there was the awesome PS4. Xbox One was doing something different. Right now we have 2 consoles with downright identical components that work exactly the same and will have 90% of the same gaming library. We lost a choice as consumers and gaming industry lost a possible path that may be the better way. For now at least...I see this coming back in a few years. |
Or... perhaps this is the better way.
If the Xbone had been accepted by consumers, then that would have been it. The future would be whatever Microsoft said it was. Sony would have looked at the fact that consumers are so willing to cede so much control, just as they are willing to pay for online multiplayer, and they would have adopted it, too. Nintendo would have followed along, too, in a generation or two just as they always do in their own time. The future would be Cliffy B's Sketchers stamping on a gamer's face, forever.
Now Microsoft still has the opportunity to pursue whatever their vision of the future is, only they will have to make it more enticing. How on Earth did consumers - who are the most important part of the gaming industry - and thus the industry itself not win here?
