It's actually not that big a drop: it's this year's year-to-date. I'm just assuming most of the market for PS3's will be exhausted this Christmas, and that Sony will keep the PS3's price high through next year to keep it from interfering with the PS4's launch.
The PS4 is my pick for this gen's "smoothest launch," meaning that it will immediately start displacing current PS3 sales...unlike the Wii U, 3DS, and Vita launches, which all were overshadowed by their predecessors after launch.
