Rosebud was the last word uttered by Charles Foster Kane before he died. It was a mystery to everyone that knew him what it meant and he took the secret of it's meaning to the grave.

Rosebud is painted on his old sled (which is burned at the end of the movie). Kane points to the sled when he dies. The sled is an allegory for Kane's youth, but this is only revealed to the viewer. Well chosen allegory for this thread, fkusumot
