Microsoft cares what Google and Apple are doing. Sony is peanuts

Maybe if that were the case, Windows Phone 8 wouldn't have ended up in the position it's in:

Their very problem was that they cared *too much* what Sony was doing 10-15 years ago, and they made a huge bet on the domination of the living room via convergance devices, completely missing the fact that the real battle would be in consumers' pockets, a place in which they were already the dominant player.

Though that attitude seems to be changing, and now they're writing off Sony just like they wrote off Apple and Google so long ago, while choosing to focus on replacing cable boxes as if that guarantees success over and above those fools at Sony and Nintendo focusing primarily on video games.

They have a habit of aiming at the wrong markets, causing their presence in markets in which they're already well entrenched to suffer.

Exactly!

The real battle was for mobile devices which Google and Apple pretty much own.

The living room control just isn't as important as they thought it was. How many hours a day do you spend watching TV compared to having your mobile phone with you?

They've bet on the wrong horse.
