It isn't their responsibility or necessarily even their prerogative to keep retail alive. They are simply giving people a choice because they see that people value that choice. And yet they have also been pushing far harder than MS this generation to make going digital an attractive option.

It may be that MS is not just full of hubris as console companies tend to be on their third outing and making a naked power grab to try to control the living room the way they've always dreamed of doing. Maybe they really do have this brilliant vision you seem to think they do. But it's quite telling that they have been utterly incapable of articulating that vision in a way that people find at all appealing.
