The Gamepad was made for third parties, that's why Nintendo software doesn't even try to use it in any meaningful way. The only reason why Nintendo slapped a touchscreen on it is that after the Wii they couldn't go straight back to a conventional dual analog controller.

Nothing positive came from the inclusion of the Gamepad. First party software doesn't need it and third party software wasn't going to come to the Nintendo home console regardless of controller and specs. It's an expensive addition with next to no value, just like stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS. And in both cases Nintendo can't remove these things from their platform.

Gamepad was made for third parties. That's an odd statement.
