What MS is doing is pretty much the opposite of future-proofing.

So having your entire Xbox One library in the cloud is going backwards? How far backwards are we going? Are we going stone age backwards or "Hey Jesus, nice to meet you," backwards?
I would have thought having a free digital copy that you have access to anytime and anywhere, internet permitting and third world country permitting, would be going forward.

Free copy?

Yes, when you buy a physical copy you will only need it to sync the game with your account, after that you can download the game on any console with your account whenever you want. You can even burn the disc if you want
|
So not free? Just solves the problem of carrying a disc around... if it even was a problem.
|
It might be a problem when someone accidentally scratches your disc and it can't play it anymore. If someone steals your disc, guess what, they can't use it, unless they buy another license.
It is free. Currently, when you buy a store copy, you don't get a digital copy also. You get no digital rights along with it. So if game is lost or whatnot, you lost that game forever.
