From what I've gathered, it's largely a bit of a wasteland. You have a relatively poor population combined with higher than US prices with the exception of retail PC games. Piracy is fairly common, and many games are simply never physically brought into the country. At this point, the first company that manages to introduce digital games for a low price, even lower than Steam's, will likely be victorious.

What the fuck is this ignorant, stereotypical bullshit?
Poor population? over 38,5 million people. Warsaw over 1,7 million population
In top 25 strongest economies in the world, and still steadily growing thanks to EU.
Piracy is common, here I will agree. But the many games aren't physically brought in the country is total bullshit. We get pretty much every game that is released in Europe, save maybe for Nintendo games, Nintendo is almost non-existent in Poland, they don't even bother to have an official representation, a middleman corporation is stocking Nintendo hardware and games, that's why Nintendo is mostly a joke for polish gamers. The other two? Pretty much every, or entirely every game is physically released here.
Prices are in line with official European prices.

When I say "poor population," I do not mean a lack of people. I mean that the population has less money per capita than in some other countries.
And yes, the overall economy is fairly strong. That doesn't mean the people are particularly wealthy.
The Polish guy I talked to a while back was a Nintendo fan, so perhaps my account comes from a biased source.

Ohh, I didn't get that meaning, not a native speaker you see. Fair enough, per capita we're not very wealthy, but that's only changing for the better.
If he was a Nintendo fan that explains everything, as I said before Nintendo is very obscure in our country, but it's only Nintendo to blame. The other two have very strong presence, especially Sony, we're even flooded with TV and cinema adds for holiday season or when a big game is about to release, since like 2011. Sony tries hard and it shows in hardware and software sales.
Edit. And sorry for the other reply, I got a bit agressive.
