I think they already knew when they announced PS Plus, that was basically the builld up for it. But it is funny how things have changed. Back in the day Sony would lose a lot of money on early adaptors. Now they probably break even or only make a slight loss on each unit, and the earlier their install base builds up the more money they will make on their online service.
