I'm not going to defend Lucas' statement regarding video games, because that's nonsense. But, I will defend his work post 1999 as a Star Wars fanatic. My mouth gaped open watching Jango Fett's head loped off by Mace Windu right in front of little Boba Fett. Jango is a memorable character for me, as well as Mace Windu (whether that's just because of Samuel L. Jackson playing him is besides the point). Darth Maul I think is a memorable villain and a shame he was offed in the climax of Phantom Menace. General Greivous is memorable as well I think. But, the main problem with criticizing no memorable characters in Star Wars in the prequels is the very fact that the storyline of the prequels focus around the already established characters of the original trilogy (Obi Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Chancellor Palpatine, Yoda...) And to clarify my position on the prequels, I liked but didn't love Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. However, I thought Revenge of the Sith was so awesome, I helped it shatter (then) box office records by seeing it 9 times in the theater (I've never seen any other movie more than 3 times before or since that, by the way).
