Nintendo's first-party 3DS line-up has been weak in Japan compared to the previous year. Nintendo aims to sell 5 million 3DS' in Japan alone in 2013. Got 3.2 million left to go. From September until the end of the year, Nintendo 3DS will light up the charts as Monster Hunter and Pokemon release. I wouldn't be surprised if the 3DS sells a minimum of 1 million units from Sept-Oct. After that, 3DS kicks off the holiday season and Japan is pretty much locked-down.
I'm not surprised Sony has not issued a statement in regards to the Japanese release of the PS4; this year is very crowded and the painting is already on the wall - Pokemon and Monster Hunter - they have no chance. Furthermore, Sony has not unveiled any 'Japanese' aimed content except for FFXV and that is not releasing in Japan until December 2014 and March 2015 in US as Square Enix will want a good install base before releasing their game. I expect a March 2014 release of PS4 in JPN.
