It is more than simply MMOs.
While you can be doing persistent worlds, you can also have a situation where in say a single player, the game is streaming up data to the cloud about your position, with it streaming down calculations to more quickly render imagery. Or it can be running the individual circumstances of the AI characters in the background. So a NPC that you met in the beginning of the game that was attempting to hurry home to see his sick mother, will be able to tell you how she's doing if you helped him out with the quest he offered, or will be attack you for failing to come to his aid because you didn't. Rather than having the current scenario where nothing happens until you accept the quest.
